Elephant Abusers go to Court (February 25, 2002)
The Star reports that three and a half years after footage of Tuli elephants being savagely beaten was broadcast, the matter is due to be heard.
According to the article, animal trader Riccardo Ghiazza, “The Elephant Sanctuary” owner Craig Saunders and Wayne Stockigt – the man captured on video beating a baby elephant – were set to pappear in the Pretoria Regional Court today to face crimilan charges relating to the Animals Protection Act. The charges carry penalties of imprisonment or fines up to R40 000.
An international outcry followed the broadcast on
M-Nets’s Carte Blanche programme of video footage of the abuse, which
Ghiazza had attempted to keep from public view by obtaining an interdict, the
article states.
